CHAPTER SIX

The Storm Rolls In

The rifle recoiled against my shoulder, but I barely noticed. I’d hit the elk!

Yes! I cheered silently.

“Great shot!” Grace raised her glasses and squinted through them. “Looks like he’s down, but let’s give it some time to be sure.”

“Okay,” I agreed.

Excitement flooded me at the thought of bringing home my very first elk. Still, I couldn’t help thinking, I wish Dad had seen me do it.

While we waited, Grace called Javier. She told him where we were and asked him to bring up one of the pack mules and some game bags for carrying out the meat.

I paced impatiently, watching the elk through my binoculars and waiting to get closer. It seemed to take forever. Finally, after the elk hadn’t moved for about fifteen minutes, we rode up the ridge to find it.

The bull was beautiful, with thick, blondish hair and six nice points on each antler. As Grace and I came closer, I felt that familiar twinge of sadness that always hit me after a successful hunt.

“Thanks, buddy,” I whispered, stroking the elk’s velvety snout. “For helping us eat healthy this winter.” Despite the somber moment, I was still riding a huge rush.

There was no time to waste. Grace and I had to get the elk field dressed and back to camp, or we’d run the risk of attracting bears or mountain lions.
